Out Of The Inkwell And Into The Fire

Yay hn.org, yay za.net, yay light.mth.uct.ac.za!

Those are your hosts (and domain hosts, service thingies, et al) and this is the brave new world of inkwell.za.net

Bad Cycle

Yup, ab-so-lute-ly nothing much. Still.

I'll spend the Decmber/January vac updating, hopefully, with new stuff appearing then or (more probably) in February.
Plans include silhouettes (I like 'em okay?) of actually-me (care of Simon Cross' digital camera), and I've already set up inkwell.za.net, since kwill.org is no longer (and in a short while it should point in the right direction too!).

Stick This In Your Nest And Raise It

I recently read Silicon Snake Oil (Cliff Stoll, author of The Cuckoo's Egg), and I am dispondent, disillusioned and wretched.

The book was written in 1995, but it's surprising how many of Stoll's complaints are still relevant today. In short, the 'net is still loaded with drek.
Some of his arguments border on Luddite (if you just 'prefer' the printed page, library index cards and other such physicality, well, enjoy -- personally I find files and photons more real and usable) but the point is that while he highlights a few issues that have been solved (to my own satisfaction), there are plenty that haven't, and others that have worsened. And unfortunately some of the drek is wetware, which doesn't upgrade very often, if at all.

And so? Well, personal sites count as drek by my reckoning (notable exceptions excepted), and I haven't been paying kwill.org as much attention as I should anyway. So, no more updates for a while: rather than spread myself, I have decided to focus on building the CLAWsite over at http://play.at/CLAWs/ (don't bother rushing over just yet)
Other projects will obviously still crop up, and I'll list 'em here with reliable old bullet lists. (Eeew!)

It's Alive!

Revivify your web design experience at A List Apart. Well, I did.
I even did some website experimentation for my new snazzy ideas for the CLAWsite (also revivified, now only at Defcon Zombie, read about it).

Find said experiment, properly wrote up and everythin', on the pages page (Hmmm... too late to rename that now, I guess).

Douglas Adams: 1952 - 2001

One of the funnier and more intelligent humans died suddenly following a heart attack this Friday, May 11 2001. He leaves a wife, daughter and many fans, at least one of whom won't be able to recite Vogon poetry again without something of a lump in his throat.
Tributes, news and way too many Hitchhiker quotes are accessible at h2g2 and douglasadams.com

Sprung Cleaning

Absolutely nothing of interest to report:
a couple of new directories and gasp! organisation
(mostly in the CLAWs and Dragonfire departments)

When I figure out how, I'll add comments

Penny Arcade is funny. Funny and uncouth.

Site, interrupted

Sometimes you just need a breather. Sometimes you're just a lazy-assed biznatch.
Sometimes you spend too much time at and God created Noni.com

Winona Ryder and Adam Sandler!? Aargh! A movie that I both must and cannot watch.

Anyway, kwill.org is now hosted here at UCT in South Africa on Simon Cross' machine, light and now features a blogger update page. Yay blogger!

I've re-activated my h2g2 page (now that the Beeb have taken control), and foolishly promised more articles there (seeing as I only ever wrote one), so I may as well foolishly promise to have things up and running here too. Eventually.

Digitally Remastered

Upgrade The Old, Insert The New
FEB 05 2001, 23h00

I must restrain myself from fiddling with too much all at once.

The UnderWorld section in gaming has been upgraded to about quarter-ways decent, and I have finally begun the Beegees Project (every Breed, every Guild) with Jacqueline Rouge, a sinister femme fatale that gives a new twist to "bodice ripper". Play that funky theme music.

Otherwise a few other non-functional links, including a potential CLAWmarks article. (Hint: New York = fantasy, if you've never been there)

Aaargh! h2g2 is down! How am I supposed to operate my digital watch now?

I wonder if you're supposed to enter one of these things every time you fiddle with something?

Those who've been here since day one (er, me, myself and I'm not sure how much Dylan took a look at) will notice some slight meddling with the layout (not much, just links and margin widths really).
Otherwise I'm just adding Real Content as it comes in, aiming for pages that aren't overly large, but avoiding the old Chinese water torture technique (y'know, data dripping in in tiny "click here for more" chunks).

The UWCG has been improved to version Alpha 2. And as soon as I've made sure that uwcg.kwill.org is working I'll post the url for the other UnderWorldies to check out.

(Tangent: I love the <acronym> tag and plan to use it to hide secret messages all over the website. Life isn't fun if you aren't abusing html.)

A website is not complete without a continuously changing "updates" page.
This website isn't complete either, but I had to throw something together after being linked to from Macarthur Park (in one of Flemmings' production diary entries, dontcherknow).

And of course I needed to put up the UnderWorld Character Generator as promised (which means I've also created gaming.kwill.org). Bookmark it at uwcg.kwill.org

Expect updates. I know I am.
